EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
